Live Music
Earlier in the week, I saw the Dezron Douglas Quintet, featuring Jason Palmer on trumpet. Palmer has played with Roy Haynes, Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ravi Coltrane, and many, many more. What a truly remarkable feature among the five incredibly talented jazz musicians on stage. Iβve been a fan of Douglas and his bass playing since the pandemic, when he released a beautiful album, Force Majeure, with harpist Brandee Younger on International Anthem Records.
You can hear these musicians on Douglasβ 2021 album, ATALAYA, which International Anthem Records also released. Hereβs a little taste of Jason Palmer in action:
Professional Soccer Lands In Maine
A sold-out crowd appeared in Portland, Maine, for the home opener of Portland Hearts of Pine's inaugural season. My pal Bryson and I entered a rainy but cheerful Fitzpatrick Stadium to witness history.
Portland Hearts of Pine showed us what they meant by The Way Soccer Should Be at their first home match last Sunday evening. The stadium is tucked between the pines and the highway, and it felt like the perfect setting. Fog, rain, mud, and red smoke only added to the atmosphere. The crowd was ready. Everyone there meant to be there, decked out in Hearts gear from head to toe. It didnβt feel like the start of something. It felt like it had already arrived. Up the Hearts! β½οΈπ²β€οΈ
With so much activity this past weekend (two graduation ceremonies, Motherβs Day), I didnβt have time for a playlist or to include too much more. I will share a great story and playlist next week, so please stay in touch and spread the word!
Thanks, as always, for reading.
