The Timeless Spirit of Neil Young
Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts didn't disappoint in New Hampshire.
There are few artists who can command a stage with the same presence and talent as Neil Young. Last Thursday night at the Bank of NH Pavilion on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, I witnessed it firsthand, and it was a powerful reminder that true artistry doesn't burn out or fade away. It was a solid two-hour set by Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts. Here’s the setlist.
At almost 80 years old, Young delivered an outstanding performance that defied age. His guitar playing was masterful, showcasing a depth and feel that many younger rock guitarists could only aspire to. And his voice, sounding almost the same as it did when he was 24, held up beautifully throughout the night.
Another highlight for me was seeing Spooner Oldham on keys. You might know him from the Drive By Truckers or… one of the original Muscle Shoals musicians who played with everyone from Aretha Franklin to Wilson Pickett, to Percy Sledge to Bob Dylan and The Everly Brothers. It was a genuine treat to watch these two musical legends collaborate, creating a sound that was both classic and alive. Also playing guitar was Micah Nelson, son of Willie Nelson.
The audience was loud and enthusiastic, a mix of generations united by the music. While the older folks in the crowd started to head home as the night progressed, those of us who stayed were captivated entirely, lost in his music and the moment.
It was my first time seeing him perform live, and my second time hearing him speak. I was lucky to attend the NYC Book Expo and listen to an interview with Patti Smith for his new biography, at the time. Anyway, this was more than just a concert; it was a testament to a long career built on authenticity and a performance that proves Neil Young is still a force to be reckoned with and a true legend.
Did you see the show? Have you seen Neil Young perform? What are your thoughts?
