This trio, by far, is the best jazz trio I’ve seen perform at this beautiful downtown club. It’s the second time I’ve seen Linda May Han Oh and Tyshawn Sorey perform, the first for Ambrose Akinmusire. I’m not kidding, this performance was out of this world, and as the gentleman next to me said, “This is some high octane, first-class jazz.“
He was right! I love the use of space by each musician, but especially Sorey, who uses every piece of his kit for percussion, including the stands, sticks, and taking apart the hi-hat right on time. There was so much found sound in his performance.

Han Oh attacks the bass like no one else in jazz right now. She’s a gift from the jazz gods — do not miss seeing her perform live. Simply an incredible style with tons of emotion and drive. She doesn’t hide her passion for music. I don’t know any current bassist who works harder.
Akinmusire is quite the trumpet player. I first heard his music on a Blue Note Records compilation, and I’ve been a fan ever since… His style reminds me of early 1960s Miles Davis, and he also uses the space very well — blowing soft, beautiful notes that seem to bend and wrap around the percussive and bass notes perfectly.
I hope to see — and hear more from this trio.
