Amelia Earhart was born in Kansas in 1897. She became interested in flying while visiting her sister in Toronto before World War I. She took her first flight lesson in 1921 and, a few years later, moved to Boston.
In 1927, she flew the first flight from a small runway in Quincy, Massachusetts, known as Dennison Field. She was a member of the American Aeronautical Society's Boston chapter and was shortly elected its vice president. Earhart was also a member of the National Woman’s Party and an early, active supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).

Earhart took off on August 24, 1932, to complete the first solo, nonstop transcontinental flight across the U.S. The flight was from Los Angeles, California, to Newark, New Jersey.
